We all need and use our CV. A personal document detailing your likes, your achievements and your previous experience, it is the first thing that potential employers will see when you apply for a job.

Have a poor CV and you won’t get that all-important interview so you can dazzle and shine.

There are plenty of tips to making sure your CV is strong enough to be attention grabbing and we at the Southern Voice have compiled a few:

• Don’t rely on a generic CV; tailor it specifically to the role that you are applying for.

Employers advertising a job will receive countless CV’s, the majority of which are generic CV’s handed out to as many vacancies as possible. Making your CV specific to the vacancy at hand can set you apart from the others. Be sure to reflect skills and give examples of the criteria that the employer is looking for in their ideal candidate.

• Make sure you spell check and proof read! The first thing they’ll pick up on is your spelling.

If you can’t show any attention to detail in your CV, they’ll assume that you’ll lack that same attention to detail on the job. Maybe ask a friend or family member to proof it for you as a second pair of eyes.

• With dozens of CVs to read through before selecting a shortlist for interview, make sure your CV is easy to read and grabs attention by separating the sections clearly and avoiding long, boring paragraphs.

• Include an ‘achievements’ section to help distinguish you from competitors. Make sure you highlight every aspect you may be excelled. Pointing out how these might aid you in the job role is an added bonus.

• Keep it concise and short as an overly long and waffly CV will lose your readers interest.

Following these tips will not give you guaranteed instant success in your job applications, but they can help you to stand out from the crowd and grab the interest of the reader to increase your chances of securing an interview – it’s all down to you from there.
